We’re excited to share a milestone we’ve been working toward for quite some time: Owl Wired is officially Matter Certified.
Getting here took longer than we originally hoped. Matter required significant work across our firmware, security, device attestation, interoperability testing, and certification process. We know many of you have been patiently waiting, and we genuinely appreciate that patience.
For us, Matter is more than adding another smart home integration. It represents where we believe the smart home is heading: devices that aren’t locked into a single ecosystem and that can work more naturally with the platforms you already use.
What does this mean for Owl owners?
Matter gives Owl Wired a standardized way to communicate with compatible smart home platforms. Instead of building completely separate integrations for every ecosystem, we can expose Owl’s capabilities through a common industry standard.
Owl Wired brings together smoke and carbon monoxide detection with motion, temperature, humidity and air-quality sensing. Matter gives us a much better foundation for making those capabilities available throughout your smart home.
It also means Owl has gone through independent Matter certification testing to verify that our implementation meets the requirements established by the Connectivity Standards Alliance.
What about existing Owl devices?
We haven’t forgotten about you.
Our goal from the beginning has been to bring Matter to existing compatible Owl Wired devices through a free OTA firmware update, rather than requiring customers to purchase new hardware.
After updating, the Owl Home app will guide you through migrating your device to Matter and setting it up with your preferred compatible smart home platform.
If you prefer to continue using the existing HomeKit integration for now, you'll still have that option during our transition period.
What happens next?
Certification was one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle, but it isn't quite the final step.
We're now completing the production infrastructure around Matter, including device attestation certificates and the remaining deployment work required to safely roll the update out to customers.
We'll begin sharing more information about the Matter firmware rollout and migration process as it becomes available.
